Another day, and yet another video premiere from Nicki Minaj (seriously, it’s like Beyonce 2.0). This time though, it’s for the official second single from her sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and not some random filler track (*ahem* “Stupid Hoe“). It must also be said that the clip for the new single, “Right By My Side” featuring Chris Brown, is far better than that trainwreck we’ve come to know as “Starships.” Please, don’t force me to talk about it anymore, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little. That being said, the Benny Boom-produced clip for “Right By My Side” is cute and fits the “Moment 4 Life“-ish song well, however it’s still nothing special. Nicki looks stunning but what’s even more noteworthy is the cameo by rapper Nas as Nicki‘s love interest. Then there’s Chris Brown. That’s all I have to say about that.
Final Consensus: It’s all rather forgettable, but a HUGE improvement over “Starships.” Then of course there’s that amazing final look Nicki flashes at the camera before it fades to black. PRICELESS!
As most you probably already know, Disco Queen Donna Summer lost her fight to lung cancer earlier today at the tender age of 63. A true pioneer and visionary to the music scene, she will be dearly missed.
I will never, and I mean never, look at a disco ball the same again. Plus, I’m pretty sure “Love to Love You Baby” is one of my favorite jams of all time! So sexually charged for it’s time.
Take a second to enjoy some of Donna Summer‘s timeless classics, below!
“Bad Girls”
“Last Dance”
“Love To Love You Baby”
“On The Radio”
And last but certainly not least, the theme song to my early twenties…
The original version of this song is always playing on my satellite radio station at work, and it is indeed one of my favorites by the Rolling Stones. Add some hip-hop flare via Dr.Dre and you’ve got yourself a little slice of heaven.
The return of legendary Rock Goddess Alanis Morissette is finally upon us!
After a four year hiatus from the music scene, Alanis‘ is back with a brand new single, simply titled, “Gaurdian.”
The good news? Alanis remains as soul-bearing as ever, but in a more comforting and loving manner than we’re used to.
“I’ll be your keeper for life, as your guardian/I’ll be your warrior of care, your first warden,” Alanis devouts in the burgeoning moments of the chorus. When she’s not letting it all hang out on the crashing guitars of the song’s climax however, Alanis is gently (and sometimes flatly) combining magical and heartfelt lyrics over the gorgeous piano keys and faint whispers of electronica provided by the song’s producer, Guy Sigsworth.
Overall, “Gaurdian” is a little less tame than I like my Alanis and after a few listens it almost comes off as religious, but it’s certainly got enough 90′s pop-rock influence, and power-ballad edge to keep my interest piqued for the release of her forthcoming album, Havoc and Bright Lights, due out later this year.
Check it out for yourself, below.
No more standing still in the hailstorm, now enter your watchwoman…
Consider this my warped shout-out to all of the hot (and not-so-hot) mama’s out there! And In keeping with my incessant need to do absolutely everything in my power NOT to do as my mama told me, I’ve decided to compile a list of some of my current faves in the realm of Dubstep, as Dubstep seems to be the genre that mom’s all over the world are gawking and scoffing at. I can be so evil sometimes.
Um, yes, actually. If you wanna get with me there’s some things you gotta know: I like my beats fast and my bass down low. Way low.
Thank you Dexcell. Thank you.
All the goodness of the original Passion Pit track, with the added genius of Borgore‘s heavy bass drops.
Ellie Goulding has been remixed dubstep-style a number of times, and I had a hard time deciding whether to post Jakwob‘s “Starry Eyed” remix or Bassnectar‘s “Lights” remix, and decided ultimately to go for “Starry Eyed”. Not to say I like this one better, I just made the executive decision to pick a Bassnectar track with a little more oomph.
I absolutely love edIT from the group known as Glitch Mob, a similarly amazing trio consisting of edIT, Boreta, and Ooah. edIT is a “G” when it comes to the hip-hop dubstep style.
I’ve already ranted and raved about the glory of Zeds Dead. They just keep on keeping on.
Melodic with a low bass line that doesn’t drop in any “typical” dubstep fashion, this one’s for the lovers. Actually, I’m not even going to say that this is dubstep, because more than likely it wouldn’t be considered as such. But it’s amazing nonetheless and stays on this list.
Mmm, tasty.
This song is just amazing. Many would attempt to argue that Skrillex isn’t dubstep. And to this I’d say that mostly, they’d be right. But this is only because you can’t necessarily label an artist as a “dubstep artist” when a vast majority of them change up their styles. Not all of Skrillex‘s tracks have the crazy heavy bass this one does, but I don’t care what the masses are saying about him; Skrillex has a piece of my heart. And La Roux? I mean, really.
Something about this track is heavily addicting. The majority of Mimosa‘s tracks are instrumental pieces, all of which I have a huge amount of respect for. I had a hard time picking just one song, and settled on this one finally because it was one of the newer tracks I’ve heard; it’s chill feel is carried on with the pull of the beat, and the bass isn’t too heavy so it’s a great track to pepper in with the rest of the songs on this list. If you like it enough, check out the first Mimosa tracks I myself heard, “Flux For Life”, “Sirius” and “Psychedelic Stereo”.
Earlier this month, Bassnectar‘s sold-out show at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz, California was cancelled last-minute due to the city’s concern about the noise level, or more specifically, the volume of the bass. If that doesn’t say something about the artist’s reputation for heavy bass drops and energetic whomps, then perhaps his notoriety would be better expressed by the fact that Bassnectar‘s latest album VAVA VOOM recently hit Rolling Stone‘s Top 40 list. Otherwise known as Lorin Ashton, a UC Santa Cruz graduate, Bassnectar is a beast. Enough said.
A more-or-less instrumental track, the title of the song as “Hardly Strictly” is misleading, because this track was actually originally titled “Priceless.” Nastynasty also made a 20 minute mix of a number of his songs which was also titled, “Hardly Strictly,” which began with the track “Priceless.” So, rather than post up the entirety of Nastynasty‘s 20 minute “Hardly Strictly” mix, and rather than post the track “Priceless” (as “Priceless” and it’s counterpart as “Hardly Strictly” do actually sound different) I opted to post the shorter 2 minute version of “Priceless” as it appears in “Hardly Strictly.” Confused? Just wait for the bass drop. It won’t even matter.
Get down with the get-down and shake what your mama gave ya.
Here’s another photo from Britney at last night’s Fox Upfronts in New York, where she and fellow X-Factor judges were sworn into battle to find America’s next big star.
It looks as if Britney is the only one who understands what a good outfit change can do for one’s photo-ops. If you’ll remember in the pic I posted yesterday, Brit was wearing a tight and scrunchy vanilla ensemble. Well, it looks like she opted for an eggplant number later in the evening and boy is it flattering!
All around musical wizard and Black Eyed Peas veteran, Will.I.Am, is determined to destroy modern music while simultaneously melting your eardrums with his new single “This Is Love,” featuring dance new-comer Eva Simmons. The track was just announced as the second single off of Will‘s debut solo album, #willpower, due out later this year. Although “This Is Love” boasts production credits by Steve Angello of mega EDM force Swedish House Mafia, the track still manages to be messy. Terribly messy. The instrumental itself is a strong piece of music and should’ve been used independently from the atrocious lyrics, questionable vocals, and painful arrangement that now taint its awesomeness.
Melanie C has been hard at work with famous London DJ and Socialite, Jodie Harsh, to write and produce a high-energy dance EP called The Night! And We Heart Pop has the first taste of what to expect with the EP’s exquisite lead track, “Set You Free.”
Fusing new age pop sounds with a few well placed bass-wobbles and the electric nuances of some of today’s hottest dance tracks, Melanie C and Jodie Harsh have forged an irresistable dance smash that is sure to inspire your Saturday night plans. The breathy vocals in the song’s opening are to die for. The powerhouse chorus aint too shabby either: “Ain’t nobody gonna turn it down/Ain’t nobody gonna tell me who to be/Let the music set you free,” Mel pleas. Seriously, It’s a dance-pop gem to be reckoned with.
Enjoy the cut, below!
You can download the full EP via iTunes this Sunday, May 15 for just $1.99! What a steal!
Over the weekend Maroon 5 unveiled the video to their latest single, “Payphone,” featuring rapper Wiz Khalifa. The highly contagious pop-tune is the first single from the band’s forthcoming album, Overexposed, due out June 26. As far as music videos go, this one is about as big-budget as they come, but unfortunately that doesn’t always equate to greatness. To be honest, I’m left a little confused by it all. First off, the concept has no relation to the meaning of the song whatsoever. Secondly, why are the Po-po’s chasing Adam again? He saved himself AND a hostage. As far as I’m concerned he was easily identifiable as a bank worker from the get-go, even when he was unrealistically dodging bullets at point-blank range with his girlfriend in tow. Ugh, I just can’t. The more I dissect, the more frustrated I become, so I’ll just end by saying the following: The official video for “Payphone” has got to be one of the worst, most unrealistic, big-budget visual representations I’ve witnessed in some time, but hey, at least Adam looks drop-dead gorgeous with his Marine-style haircut, and bloody lips. That’s all that really matters, right?
Moments ago Miss Britney Spears was sworn in as an X-Factor judge alongside Demi Lovato, LA Reid, and Simon Cowell at Fox studios in New York.
Look at those locks! That tan! That body!
And the best part? When asked to make a statement, Brit-brit sounded somewhat intelligent! Using her deep, Does-She-Have-A-Coldney-Or-Is-She-In-Fact-Constipatedney Good Morning Americapromo voice, The Holy Spearit shared, “Well first of all, I’m so excited about this whole experience. It’s gonna be so much fun and so different from anything I’ve ever done, and I’m ready to find a true star.”
I don’t think there is much to say besides: Iconicney!
