Lanky pop-country star Taylor Swift has just unleashed her newest single upon the world, and as Madonna would say, it’s REDUCTIVE. The cut titled, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” will hail as the lead offering from Taylor‘s forthcoming studio album, Red, due out October 22nd.
Having been produced by pop’s dream-team, Max Martin and Shellback, you’d think the tune would offer something a little more special, but it’s more of the same from Miss Swift-you know, a remedial guitar beat and lyrics that were obviously torn from a page right out of her twelve-year-old self’s diary. However, as much as I love to hate on Taylor, I foresee big radio success for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” because, let’s be honest, it’s kind of catchy (okay, really catchy) and totally relatable from a 14 year-old girl’s perspective. Otherwise, it sounds like a B-side from Avril Lavigne‘s debut album, Let Go.
Besides getting bitched out by my neighbor for not making time to help him pick out percription lenses and recieving a random phone call “with important information regarding my recent vaginal mesh implant,” it’s a glorious kind of day. The rain is pouring, my bi-ceps are sore from an amazing work-out, and Shania Twain is blaring from my Macbook. I don’t know about you but it’s definitely a throwback kind of day. Here are a handfull of my favorite thought provoking oldies that I’ll be spinning for the next few hours to brighten my circumstances and remind me of a simpler moment in time.
This really warmed my soul and put a smile on my face today, even amidst my most vile attitude.
I introduce to you the cutest acoustic pop duo ever: Brandon Jenner & Leah Felder.
Brandon & Leah have been making sweet, sweet music together ever since their high school days. The pair radiate an infectious summertime spirit in their art that’s been heavily influenced by life in their quaint surf town of Maliby, CA: “We never went to clubs,” says Leah. “We just went to the beach to have fun, and that’s what we wanted our music to reflect.”
And I think they’ve done just that. If you have any doubts, then be sure to check out their debut single, “Life Happens,” from their self-produced debut album, due out later this year. The super cute and sunny track features a lovely set of bouncy acoustic strings as Leah croons in a honeyed croak of positivity: “You’re lost at sea like a ship without a captain/Drifting endlessly around imaginary islands/The things you’re missing, the moments slipping/So stop your wishing and start listening/There’s too much whining, oh oh oh/Too much complaining, yea eh eh/We should be laughing/We should be kissing/We should be here right now.”
MTV.com’s Buzzworthy Blog recently premiered the official video for “Life Happens,” which has garnered nearly 200,000 views in just two weeks, thanks in large part to social media help from Brandon & Leah‘s famous friends and family (the Jenner/Kardashian clan, and artists like Josh Groban and Avril Lavigne). Produced by Funk Factory Films (Aloe Blacc, Gogol Bordello) and filmed in the mountains and beaches of Southern California, the clip makes for a perfect companion to the bright, Carribean flavor of the track.
No doubt, 2011 was an epic year in music. Quite literally the planets in the pop music universe aligned to bring us some of the most amazing titles from some of the industry’s biggest Diva’s. Britney dazzled us with Femme Fatale, Beyonce took control of her artistic freedom with 4, Lady Gaga preached messages of self-love on Born This Way, Kelly Clarkson returned better than ever with Stronger, and Rihanna brought sexy back with Talk That Talk. In addition we saw stellar breakouts by English chanteuse Adele and party rockers LMFAO and were even blessed with a completely new and amazing Coldplay record. And Becasue there were so many honorable relases this year, I had one hell of a time ranking the top 25. Without a doubt, every album mentioned on the list is worthy of a listen and holds a special place in my heart and on my hard-drive. So without further ado, I present to you We Heart Pop‘s top 25 albums of 2011:
Enter newly leaked Ke$ha track, “Suicide (Little Sad),” which began making its rounds on the internet mere hours ago!
Information regarding the newly unveiled song is sparse. Is it a track from her upcoming album set for release in May 2012? Is it a leftover from a past album’s previous sessions? As information becomes available, I will fill you in, but until then: TAKE A LISTEN!
“I know I havent been my sunny self these days/ but that doesn’t mean you have to go and hide the razor blades” Ke$ha softly croons in a lovely wavering tone against a bubbling bass line and light guitar riff. It’s already apparent that this isn’t your average Ke$ha track (but please, feel free to continue shoveling through your junk drawer in an attempt to find that glitter of yours.) Boasting a mid-tempo 80′s pop-rock flare and a pinch of Avril Lavigne‘s ““Things I’ll Never Say,”” the heartfelt ode to feeling sad is a wonderful departure in sound for the “We R Who We R” singer.
As the song progresses we are treated to a beautiful bouquet of layered strums and cooing effects while K-Money serves up some surprisingly great vocals: “I’m not suicidal/I’m not in denial/Im not really feelin’ that bad/ Just cant wait to find out, everything I’m blind about/Losing the illusions I have/I’m just a little sad.”
If you thought the track was actually about suicide then you’re probably realizing at this point that you were robbed. Fear not, you aren’t alone! When I saw the title of the track I was imagining something violent and dancey but I’ve come to the conclusion that the message behind the lyrical content is a positive one: It’s ok to be sad and apparently Ke$ha gets sad too, eventually everything will be ok!
Bottom line: The track is gorgeous! You’ll be quick to hit “repeat” as the catchy mood inducing melody fades all too quickly just short of the three minute mark.
On another note, I definitely think it’s a great idea for a mainstream artist like Ke$ha to talk about this topic in her music especially in the wake of all the recent teen suicides in the national media. It may sound silly but it will probably save lives.
I recently came across this exceptional cover by none other than Avril Lavigne‘s house band. The six talented gentleman that normally assist Avril took the time to cover Britney Spears classic “Baby One More Time” during a day off from touring. The cover, filmed in a Canadian hotel, is simply everything with it’s acoustic stylings, rugged vocals, and unique arrangement.
Avril Lavigne! Seriously though girl, your acting is pretty fierce! Werrk those tears!
Check out the pint sized pop princess’ latest video for her new single, Wish You Were Here. The track serves as the third overall single from her fourth studio effort, Goodbye Lullabye. In the clip a grief-stricken Lavigne turns on the water works and absolutely slays the hell out of nothing but a dynamite stricken room, a bathtub, and a shit ton of eye make-up. The video is rather simple but essentially acts as a nice compliment to the heartfelt tone of the jam.
I’m glad this song became a single as it was one of my favorite Avril Lavinge songs of all time! The insanely catchy melodies featured throughout, as well as the highly relatable subject matter make it extremely addictive and almost impossible not to love. I feel this has the potential to become a huge success.
Feast your eyes upon Rihanna‘s forty second seventh (and presumably final) LOUD! single and music video for celebratory anthem Cheers (Drink To That).
That being said, the clip is pure perfection: It’s glam, it’s cheeky, it’s cocky, it’s confident and it’s candid. Watch as Rihanna Princess of Barbados enjoys the life of a superstar, getting freaky in da club, performing on stage, showing love to fans, and rocking the streets of her native island nation. Overall the video encompasses everything that a true pop star should be, not to mention the fact that it’s just plain infectious, inviting, and satisfyingly enjoyable to watch.
At this rate that Rihanna reign aint never gonna let up.
If there was ever a WeHeartPop essential music tool, it is this: Spotify–a completely innovative and completely free music service that has just landed in the US.
In more detail, Spotify is a genius music application for your home computer or mobile phone that makes listening, sharing and discovering new music effortless. Literally all you do is request an invite via the Spotify homepage. When your invite comes (I had to wait about 4 days) you simply follow the instructions and download the application to you computer. Minutes later, you will have access to every album ,genre, and artist you can imagine. All you do is type a related word, title, artist, or phrase into the search field and, VIOLA!
What I love most about Spotify is that it makes re-visitng your favorite albums a cinch without having to upload them onto your computer or dig through that old storage space in order to access them. And if you’re a blogger or music enthusiast like me, it makes reviewing albums and sampling just released titles a breeze! I’ve already indulged in new releases by Avril Lavigne, Simon Curtis, and Kelly Rowland. And the other day when I was painting my living room it took me less than 10 seconds to thrown on P!nk‘s 2001 M!ssundaztood for background ambiance. I can’t say it enough: You have to try this!
I mean seriously, have you ever wanted to hear what Floptina Aguilera‘s failed Bionic really had to offer? Didn’t wanna waste the money or even use the space on your computer for an illegal download? Rest assured, Spotify is here!
Spotify also boasts:
* A built in, easy to use, one-click library solution that categorizes and organizes all the tracks and albums you listen to and “star”. Spotify also takes it upon itself to link to your iTunes Library, making it even easier to find related artists to those already on your computer.
* A drag and drop playlist creation option–each new playlist you create is saved to your account and is accessible from wherever you use Spotify. And if you needed to know, a single playlist can store up to 10,000 tracks. Team or “collaborative” playlists are also possible with Spotify. You and your friends can share a playlist, and each of you can add or remove tracks–perfect for those long road trips with more than one passenger!
* A Customizable profile option that makes it even easier for you to identify yourself all-the-while sharing tracks and play-lists with your friends, family, and co-workers. You can even connect Spotify to Facebook and/or Twitter and share your love that way.
The only drawback you ask? Every 10 minutes, a 30 second advertisement plugs a relevant artist and some spotify feature mentioned above. It really isn’t that bad though.
If you don’t need more proof and are just as excited as I, then click the link below to enter your e-mail and request your Spotify invite today!
